Concepcion Picciotto

A Living Landmark

"Conchita" Picciotto has maintained a continuous peace protest, living in Lafayette Square across the street from the White House since 1981. No visitor to the White House could have missed her plastic hut and provocative signs.

Many Washington landmarks are monuments to war.  Conchita is a living peace monument.

She flashed her characteristic peace sign at me when I stopped by in June 2008.

With the US now engaged in three wars, her message remains as fresh and vital today as it was when she began her vigil in 1981.
